Many of the people in computer world are not familiar to this term, even though they are affected by its consequences. It is a day celebrated for open standard of documents. Every document or files should be solely owned by its creator or users not by the software vendor which owns the document format. This is the motto of Document Freedom Day.

You have perhaps noticed that an Excel application file created by 2000 or 2003 with extension (.xls) is not compatible with its later version 2007 with extension (.xlsx). This has definitely created problems for many users out there. The document freedom says that the format of file should be open and standardized irrespective of specific vendor. A user should be use a file even after decades despite upgradation of particular software. To make it short, there should not be one-to-one relationship between file format and software vendor.

Concluding Remarks

Document freedom is a must in this fast growing computer world. It breaks down the monopoly of some specific giant companies. For example: windows media audio & video (.wma & .wmv) are file formats popularized by Microsoft which forced other software vendors to be compatible with that format. In case of open standard, file format will be finalized by mutual agreement and it will not be property of any particular vendor.

No doubt, Google and Microsoft are big giants in cyber world .Microsoft, a leading software vendor, claims that over 95% of computers in world use its operating system. When people talk about computer, Microsoft is the first thing that comes to peoples mind. Google, on the other hand, hosts biggest search engine and claims 63% of search in its pocket.

Microsoft and Google have been providing varieties of services to Internet users. They do compete in similar services like email, messenger, social networking, operating system, blogging, etc. But, there is no certainty that the competition is fair. In fact, Google is only a hope for knocking down Microsoft. Google has always tried to promote non-Microsoft products like Mozilla, Apple, Python, Ajax, etc. Microsoft, in order to maintain its losing grip on Internet users, is engaged in unethical games like stealing codecs from small vendors.

Recently, when Microsoft was trying to buy Yahoo, Google was the biggest opposer stating that it will be threat to Internet leading to monopoly of Microsoft. Yahoo, as known to all, is another big email & search engine service provider. But, Google has also made itself by buying other's services like Blogger, Picassa, etc. Microsoft however was busy to push its person to board of directors of Yahoo.

Concluding Remarks

There should not be monopoly of a vendor in Internet. Competition is a most for growth provided it is fair enough. In my opinion, Google should be promoted enough to stand in front of Microsoft & challenge it.
