I am a professional computer engineer. Besides that, I have been blogging since one year. I have tried out many blogging platforms like Blogger.com, WordPress.com, Typepad.com, Xanga.com, Blog-City.com, Typepad.com, Vox.com, Windows Live spaces, etc.
Blogger.com is definitely one of the best blogging platforms. The best part of it is that we are able to post from emails easily. We need not have to use its blogging client tool for posting posts. We can also use Flock client tool for posting. Also, Flock can be used for posting in WordPress, Live Journal, etc. Most bloggers do not blog for sake of making peoples know their view only but also monetize from it. Blogger.com is best for adding google ads. Blogger.com is owned by Google which has turned into verb due to its wide spread popularity. But that has nothing to do with indexing of your blog in blogger.com in google search. The worst part of it is that, blogger.com is held up from time to time for maintenance. Also, we have problem in uploading images through its client tool. Also, an image posted by email often gets not posted.
Wordpress.com provides more customization tools that blogger.com. It provides a bundle of cool and prettier themes for your blog. No need to mention, it has gained wide spread popularity too. But it does not allow adding external html codes. Thus, it is not ad supported which is major drawback. Its blogging client is not good enough for composing posts. Also, it takes a much time to load blog site hosted on it.
Blog-City.com is a feature laden blogging platform. But its free version has a few limitations – 2000 post, 500 MB monthly data transfer which does not bother much for a hobbyist cum professional. Only its full version supports ad to place which is major drawback.
LiveJournal is an open source blogging platform. LiveJournal has a strong social networking flavour. Its drawback is that its paid version only supports external ad to place.
Xanga.com is an ad-driven free blogging service, with a social networking inclination like LiveJournal. If the ads can be overlooked, Xanga stands out because it offers a combined platform for Text, Audio and Video blogging. It allows archiving, so that paid users can download archives. But many bloggers feel uneasy on the url provided like www.xanga.com/funfeeds and of course the ads it place in our blog makes it unattractive.
Windows live spaces is indeed good blogging platform with a social networking flavour and less customization. Its problem is in its blogging client used to post articles
Concluding Remarks
For a professional blogger, Blogger.com is the best suitable blogging platform as of now. Where as, for a hobbyist, WordPress is more capable platform. For a blogger with interest in social networking, LiveJoural is more suitable.
